I just completed a personal project of Myles Christman. He's a young man who had a dream and it was crushed by BC School Sports bureaucracy. It's quite a tragic story and I felt compelled to write and let the Ministry of Education, our Premier, and other orgs involved know that they should have taken exception to Myles case. Mona Mattei published the original story last Monday and recently published my follow up letter in her publication, The Boundary Sentinel.

Unfortunately, the BCSS has ruined Myles' chance of playing in league this year and due to low participation by other students the school will no longer have enough to field a team for next year. Myles will be unable to show off his talent to scouts which would potentially grant him a full scholarship. This kind of discrimination of against children in rural schools has to stop!

The Cattle have left Whistling Kettle Ranch

Crow's Nest Photography's home base is Whistling Kettle Ranch in the heart of the Boundary Region of British Columbia. We host cattle here twice a year and hay in the summer. 213 acres of beautiful, wild countryside with the pristine Granby river at the foot of the property.

The cattle walk 2km up the road to the 'Long Ranch' where they will be enjoy huge round bales of hay until the spring grass shoots up in 2012.

Toni tried to entice the cattle out the day before with hay in the back of her pick-up truck but the cattle were reluctant to cross one of our bridges on the way out. Overnight we received significant snow fall so the next day Toni brought a friend and the two ladies on horseback successfully convinced the cattle to head home where their next meal would be waiting. Sometimes the good old fashioned ways work better. I think Toni prefers her beloved horse to her truck anyways!

She took the time to read through my business plan, listen to my ideas, and consider all angles before developing several designs. I was so excited when I opened up the artwork! I fell instantly in love. It was like she read my mind and then crafted something that fit like a glove.

Crow's Nest Photography shares space on Whistling Kettle Ranch in the Boundary Region of British Columbia. Nestled in the Granby Valley amid the Monashee Mountains. The air is crisp, the backgrounds are clean, authentic, and dramatic!

In October two families came up to have their 2011 family portraits done.

We all enjoyed the walk and fresh, Autumn air. The best portraits happen when you allow people (including little people) to be themselves. Each family is unique. Their interactions, personalities, age combinations. They need room to breath, make noise... in Nolan's case... roll around in the grass. Observing people in a natural setting with out distractions is prime! I fall in love easily and find beauty and character in the smallest actions. The way he holds his wife. The twinkle in an eye when a child hears their parent sing a favorite song. Bare feet. Kisses. Who doesn't? I love what I do and I hope it shows!

Turns out Amber loves children as much as I do... she co-owns a lovely boutique called 4 Little Monkeys

in the heart of Grand Forks, BC. They sell gently used clothes for all family members and one of my favs Melissa & Doug toys. I'm looking forward to mounting a 16x20 metal print of the family up on their store wall. I'll update this posting with a photo of it when it's produced.

One of the many gargoyles on top of Notre Dame with the Eiffel Tower in the distance. Most of the seven million people who visit the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris each year probably do not realize that the legendary gargoyles adorning this medieval masterpiece were not constructed until the nineteenth century. Crow's Nest was very comfortable in this roost!

My quest for the elusive Crow in Tofino led me to the door step of Ann MacLeod whose family has called the town home for over a hundred years. She runs a B&B near the Botanical Garden and it looks rather inviting! Although she wasn't home to tell me stories the path that led past this crow led me to more and I ended up talking to a lovely lady who moved to Clayoquot Island in 1920 from her birth place in Victoria, BC. Imagine moving from somewhere so modern to the 'boat access only' back woods of Vancouver Island's wild coast! No electricity, no sewer, no roads or cars, and no WIFI! She said it was GREAT and she treasured her time there.

BC's Economic Addiction

I was editing the photos Kyra and I took at the BC Seniors Games this past week and came across a photo that Kyra took in Trail of Teck Cominco's stack. I was focused on the games and the logistics of getting what I needed for my client. Teck happened to be one of the game's biggest sponsors. Kyra commented a number of times how the smelter was such an eye sore and how disgusted she was with the constant spewing of foul smelling smoke. So when I came upon her photo I decided to play on her thoughts and photo as a break from the photo editing. I turned the stack sideways and was immediately struck by a comparison of the addiction of smoking and the addiction of a community, town, province, country on a successful industry. The town currently depends on this company and the economic benefits as does my current hometown of Grand Forks and its big employer, Roxul. Human and environmental health is pushed aside and the companies bribe politicians and scientists (my speculation) and cloud the collective into believing its a good thing. Children can not safely play in the soil in Trail due to the amount of lead.

Short term gain long term pain!

We are about to take flight from our Boundary Region home base on August 6 and returning 15th of August. Crow's Nest is working on building its stock library and hoping to compose new artwork of the Westcoast's stunning landscapes. Below are two images taken on previous pilgrimages.

I grew up on the Northshore of Vancouver, BC but I'd consider Vancouver Island's Westcoast a second home. I'm sure many others feel the same way. If you mention Tofino at a party of Vancouver'ites you are bound to hear a few gasps and claims that it is the best place on earth. The organic fragrance, a mixture of salt, cedar, kelp, and moisture. The light quality as the sun dips down into the Pacific surf past Frank Island. Weather changes quickly and morning fog can pull back to reveal cloudless blue skies in hours. Bull whips, beached dog fish, sea urchins with arms outstretched in tide pools. Black rock islands, big and small, piercing through kilometers of fine beach. Sand dollars and other beach treasure await those who explore the tide lines. Boardwalks winding through old growth rainforests. Crows, cougars, eagles, seals, and even salmon shark!

The westcoast is home to a story for me and it is a slow unraveling. I've had an interest in BC history all my life and my bookshelves are full of books that I pull down in reference as I travel around the province. In the last few years since I've moved to the Boundary region its been the focus and the 100+ year old log houses on our property are still shrouded in mystery. Still always on my mind is 1941/42 in Tofino area and one day I'll write down the story that swirls around my head like a can of alphabet soup. Each day, each new piece of information, each character that reveals a little more of itself to me the letters move into words and the story unfolds. I have contacts lined up to talk to in Tofino and photographs to capture.

A Kick off to the Summer and the Beauty of its Night Sky

Randy Halverson shot and produced an amazing time lapse and had a man named Simon Wilkinson compose music for it. Unbelievably beautiful! National Geographic brought it to my attention and I had to share it. Ask me how many goosebumps I had while view it?!

During the month of May, I shot Milky Way timelapse in central South Dakota, when I had the time, and the weather cooperated. The biggest challenge was cloudy nights and the wind. There were very few nights, when I could shoot, that were perfectly clear, and often the wind was blowing 25mph +. That made it hard to get the shots I wanted. I kept most of the shots low to the ground, so the wind wouldn't catch the setup and cause camera shake, or blow it over. I used a Stage Zero Dolly on the dolly shots and a "Milapse" mount on the panning ones.

I wasn't planning on photographing this afternoon. I heard the storm out my office window and the Meadow Lark call so I grabbed my jacket and camera. Perhaps storms are a reminder that even during dangerous, tumultuous, challenging periods if you open your eyes to the possibility ... something, often quietly, reveals itself to remind us of a larger message.

Trouble in the Finch House

Crow's Nest has been very busy lately with some commercial shoots. While I work on post production my office space needs to be a consistent light so I am forced to draw my curtain shut. I can, however, hear the wild birds flitting outside and once in a while I would peek around the curtain to discover lots of quarrels amongst the finches. The birds in the air are Cassin's finch and on the feeder are American Gold Finches.

I've been admiring Spring in the valley. Close by our place is a ranch with Highland Cattle and their hardy herd has reason to celebrate. A new member! A sweet, furry, little creature that is so adored by its family. This ancient breed is quite fascinating and if you don't know much about them then you should take 2 minutes to read this article

Below is a snippet from the article that I found interesting as the Highland Cattle have similar characteristics which I admire in the crow.

Reaching Out - Lessons from a Pre-Schooler

I am currently on the road photographing in California with my family. I was capturing the wildlife along the coastline on a stormy Sunday afternoon and turned about to take a look for the where abouts of my family when I noticed my son sitting on a park bench talking to a stranger. At first the older gentleman seemed to play like he was ignoring him and I wondered whether to intervene and draw my son away. Then I noticed the man turn and take more of an interest. Then it seemed a connection took place and the two of them really took off in a dialog about something (I couldn't quite hear over the commotion of the shore birds). There really was no need to interrupt they were doing just fine. An important reminder to me the importance in learning to how to strike up a conversation with a stranger. A skill that could lead you to new opportunities, new friends, knowledge, and generally a healthy feeling that the world is friendly, accepting, place. The older man's family was ready to go before we were but before he left he insisted that his wife take a photo of the two of them on the bench. Apparently he didn't want to forget the moment either.

Crow's Nest Photography was in Boundary Electric's shop last week doing some product shots of custom built sub station destined for Northern Saskatchewan. This substation is gigantic and the shop is a busy place. The mixed lighting was tough on colour balance but all in all the shoot went very well. Boundary Electric's building and history is very interesting. It is a family run business founded in 1947 by the current president's grandfather and these days the generational corporate succession is unusual. The main shop is the region's retired railway round house similar to the round house located in Yaletown (Vancouver, BC).

Black Bridge over the Kettle River

My son had asked me if we could walk over and explore around a bridge the locals call 'Black Bridge'. I've heard it's a hang out for the local high-school and judging from the graffiti underneath I'd guess that to be true. It's winter right now but come summer this old railway bridge is popular as a jumping off point into the Kettle River. Aside from a few crows and a lone eagle it was pretty quiet this March afternoon.

Patience and Ravens: a challenging story starring a 300mm lens

For the past 5 days I have been admiring the Ravens, North American Crows, Bald and Golden Eagles, and Magpies. Our ranch, Whistling Kettle, has had a blanket of snow for 4 months now and last night another few inches fell. I didn't just name my business after crows because I live close to the Crowsnest Hwy #3... I am in love with these beautiful, curious, creative, extremely intelligent birds.

The shots above are of ravens a relative of the crow. At some point I should invest in a 800mm lens which will allow me better access to these shy, reserved birds. I'm lucky to get a shot. Seriously, they are not like Vancouver crows which are practically social, city pets. If ravens don't see you, they hear you and will take off to find a perch of solitude somewhere else. Their vocal sounds are bizarre to say the least and have sent chills up my back at times.

Some Info about Ravens

Habitat: Coniferous, mixed forests; coastal, agricultural areas.

Diet and Behaviour: Omnivorous, feeding on whatever available. Specializes in scavenging on large carcasses, descending on road kills, but also kills rodents, robs nests, feeds on insects. Highly intelligent, cautious; follows predators, hunters to take advantage of easy meal. Carries, hides food for future needs.

Pairs, groups cavort in aerial displays.

Voice: Varied calls include harsh croak, liquid bell-like sounds, screamed kraaah, metallic rattles.

Did you know? Crows and ravens are always at odds. Ravens raid crow nests. Crows often swoop down on ravens while attempting to chase them away.

Crow's Nest used a Gorilla Pod as a lighter alternative tripod when traveling in Paris. This twilight shot of the Arc de Triomphe was taken with my DSLR attached to a gorilla pod that was hugging a Parisian curb. All the while water is running off towards the gutter. It can also be used as a speed light mount. All pretty valuable when trying to travel light.

This video was taken with my compact Canon Powershot mounted on my smaller Gorilla Pod. The legs wrapped around the branches of our apple tree at the ranch. The birds took all of about 5 minutes to get used to it. Then it was business as usual.

This set up was for a dog sledding race and I wanted to capture a couple of videos of the mushers going by as I was busy capturing quality stills. It worked nicely attached to a bean bag which also provided me with a rest for my second DSLR.By the way if you are every searching for the ultimate back pack look no further. My daughter performed her first singing solo in December. It is called 'One Voice'. She starts off the song, another choir member joins, and then a third. Soprano's & Company is a local youth choir and I am already excited about their next performance in the Spring!

She was my first photographic subject and never complained. Thanks to my Mom, and her Dad for some of the images in the slide show as well.

This time last year we were doing the final touches on the house before moving from our rental in Grand Forks. Official move in day was December 15. We were so caught up in the bigger details of renovation and setting up our family in its new home that we didn't get truly appreciate the natural wonders surrounding us. This year it's like seeing things with fresh eyes. Grant spotted this tiny owl perched in our Aspen just outside the parameter fence. I would have dismissed it as a leaf. The delicate owl is that little. Fortunately, it was not a shy or jumpy bird so I was able to get a little closer once I had my snow gear on. This shot was hand held at f7.1 300mm focal length at ISO 800

I went out to photograph the cattle leaving our property as the snow is getting too deep for grazing. Due to a stray cow I ended up driving the herd to the Long's Ranch on foot with nothing but my telephoto lens that might have appeared to the cattle as some new, strange, object to be feared and avoided :) I guess my yipping and loud hand whistle helped too. Good work out as it's a 4 km return trip. Usually, my friend does the driving on horseback but she mentioned it was too slippery for the horses which I could see as the cows were slipping on the road if they went too fast. My friend and her truck were stuck back at my place trying to herd the lone cow to catch up and join its friends. No luck and by the time they were done I'd already pushed the cattle up to their ranch. Not too much hard work though as the cattle were mostly motivated by the tractor with hay leading the way and their desire to stay as a group.

Flurries forecasted but actually snow is accumulating quickly

Grant spot what he believes to be a Hawk Owl which apparently is pretty rare in these parts. He managed to get some shots through the kitchen window but never managed to get outside for a closer sharper shot. Sometimes just better to get something than nothing so we could at least ID the bird. Hoping it will return so we can try to get a little closer.

Then off for a family walk to visit the cattle. The weather person's forecast was for flurries today but we are getting much more than that at Whistling Kettle Ranch. Tuesday evening is going to dip down to minus twenty-four degrees Celsius. Home fires will be working hard to keep us cozy in our home. All that wood chopping is paying off!

The Long's cattle returned to our property last week and I went for a walk this morning to see how they were handling the snow. A chilly -5 Celsius but all was peaceful in the field. Ben, my English Mastiff fits right in amid the brown cows and they never seem to mind him.

My favorite shot from the walk were these three but there are definitely other cute ones.

No one gets it done alone - inspiration from a friend

Lately I have been inspired back to health by a new friend Teralee Trommeshauser who is also starting a business Real Life, Real Health. When I met her at a conference in Nelson I was compelled to ask her what she did to keep such a healthy glow. She definitely practices what she preaches and if her health is any indication of her talent to coach she will no doubt be successful in her business venture. Teralee, has reminded me of my belief in nutrition as a way to support every aspect of my life and that it must be accompanied by a healthy, active lifestyle. As a photographer who is busy putting a business plan together and trying to balance out my time as a mother and wife I find little time left for anything else. Alas what will a career or family be worth with out my health both mentally and physically? For now I will relay on inspiration from Teralee, her health investment, her new business, and her adventurous stories to plant my own seeds of change and finding balance. Her business name, Real life, Real Health is perfect in my mind. Thank you Teralee... no one gets it done alone! Hope I find myself giving back to you one day soon.

Lunch today was caramelized onions with tofu on top of hummus and sesame rice crackers. Topped with grape tomatoes, deli sprouts,avocado, and cracked black pepper. It was delicious an full of flavors! My four year old son wouldn't touch this lunch for any convincing reason. I'm hoping all my ohhh and ahhhss might one day make him consider a bite.

Anyone want to buy a tinker toy sculpture?

My son, Jack, requested a new tinker toy sculpture. He likes to play the art supplier. He inventories the pieces and instructs me to ask him if he has any (insert whatever piece is to be used next) and he passes it over. When I felt the sculpture was complete he passed me an invoice :)

He told me, "I better get a good price for this sculpture to pay off his invoice!"

Since it was minutes before bed he gathered his flashlights (his other favorite toy right now).

I said, "well, first we have to clean up the toys."

to which he replied, "Can you take a picture so we won't forget it".

"Ok, sure!" I say happily.

We weren't exactly on time for bed. Oh well.

One of the greatest reasons I love being a Mom is a joyful return to free play.

Wild Grouse

G called me to come see the visitor on our front lawn and at first it was like looking for Waldo as the Grouse just blended into the leaves. We wondered if it was hurt or stunned as Grant could go right up and stroke it. It appeared to want to rest. The dogs were still snoring it off so I knew I had a little window of time to get a photograph of this beautiful wild bird. Eventually it got up and ran under our lilac tree. A short time later I heard Zeus bark sharply and found a raven was playing with him. Of course the elusive bird flew away when I came out to investigate. They are very shy birds.

What it means to be a rural photographer

Being a rural photographer means never having to drive to capture nature's bounty. The pace is slower and you have more time to ponder. The internet speeds are also slower too (some neighbors are still on dial up!). We have no cell phone signal and we revert to using walkie talkies to communicate on our 213 acres. There are very little distractions or busy backgrounds in my outdoor images but I ALWAYS have to wear boots unless I want to return with soggy, cold feet. Best of all when you return to your work station from a coffee break you sometimes have company siting on your laptop. Aren't crickets supposed to bring luck? Hopefully!

Portraits can happen anywhere anytime

Portraits don't have to be in a studio with special lights. You don't have to set aside a chunk of time and worry about outfits. Life as it is. Pure and Simple.

This shot of Anik is from 2006 while at a birthday party. It was a candid photo as she was perched on someone's hip while they were engaged in conversation that she couldn't participate in ;) It is definitely not an ideal situation for a portrait as the background was cluttered and she wasn't facing the natural light coming in through the window. A good challenge and it turned out pretty well all things considering. Studio portrait can't be replaced but life moments don't have to be completely overlooked because after all they happen a heck of a lot more often :)

Our friend Mike is visiting from South Korea and I was showing him around Whistling Kettle Ranch. I noticed a Cotton Wood tree was missing down by the river. You see you get used to the landscape like a city skyline. I was unaware that we have beavers on the Granby River. We are used to them in the creek and there are many daming it up at various points. A fairly ambitious project to dam the Granby! None the less here was this massive tree down and it was very apparent that one or many beavers have been busy taking chunks to either stock their winter pantry or help fortify their walls. Mike took a pic of me pretending to be a beaver :)

Kyra is a great model because she has no inhibitions in front of the camera. She doesn't think much more than creatively what we could do next. She doesn't fret about which side is her best or whether she has lint on her clothes. Best thing you can do as a model or subject is relax and have fun. Delete buttons were invented for a reason ;)

I was at a weekend business meeting in Nelson and thoroughly enjoyed the town. The people are creative and motivated by their lifestyle. Due to the huge body of water (Kootenay Lake) Nelson is often hunkered in with clouds similar to what I grew up with on the North Shore of Vancouver. I realize that I learn best by making mistakes but sometimes it just feels painful. I was really excited about this harbor image taken in multiple exposures, with fisheye, then stitched together with Photoshop. In my head it worked and it was going to be cool. On screen it just didn't. I'm confident that my disappointment will lead to focusing on shooting what I need next time. But alas chances of getting the harbor with cool clouds when I live six hours away will be tough and I might have to make the pano of perhaps our river in Autumn colors. Sigh... I guess I learned to get beyond crawling and that seems an infinitely more complex a challenge especially at age 1.

This time last year I was documenting the Paris Metro and enjoying time with my partner, Grant. A real different pace following a herd 52 km this year through the wilds of British Columbia. That's the great thing about photography is that its only limits is your imagination and drive. Only draw backs about this trip was the mosquitoes and limitations due to lack of a babysitter for my four year old son. I had to consider his safety when thinking of interesting angles. Nice to have his company though!

Following a family from engagement to marriage is incredible... but the cherry on the cake is when they have children. In post production you become so familiar with the details of their faces and then when I see the couples children it's quite fascinating to see the miracles of life. His nose, her eyes, their love, pride, and joy. It's like a unique life story and I am always grateful to be a part of telling it.

Kyra and I hiked into Smugglers Cover Park in early March. I miss the coast and the ocean. The comfort is in the salty air for me. Kyra found the cutest salamander which turned out to be of the poisonous variety. The origin of the name Smuggler Cove is subject to much speculation. One theory holds that the bay was used by one Larry "Pig Iron" Kelly to pick up Chinese labourers to be smuggled into the United States after the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Another story is that the concealed cove was used as a transhipment location for the smuggling of bootleg liquor, produced on neighbouring Texada Island, into the US during the prohibition era. Given the cove's proximity to Secret Cove, one can conjecture at some connection.

The J* ranch is a quiet place perched on the edge of the old railroad bridge. Brown Creek joins with the Granby here. For more than a hundred years a barn has housed farm animals and kept hay dry.

While traveling with my Nikon we stayed in a fantastic apartment in Pairs for four days. I had posted on Craigslist a few months back, spent four or so hours researching all the responses, features, locations, and then decided on one that fit into our budget. We paid well below hotel prices and enjoyed all the comforts of home as it is a home. The couple had gone traveling themselves and were happy to make a little money on their newly renovated apartment. Faith worked in both of our circumstances. This apartment was everything Paris in style and efficiency. The view was outstanding and at our door step was a quiet street full of local vendors. 2 minutes from metro line that would get us everywhere.

We took a sunshine break and sat down on the bricks outside Amsterdam Centraal. I was carried away by the piano accordion to another timeless place and thankfully our schedule allowed me to hang there for a while. These performers seemed to be pleased to have me capture them and although we spoke no language in common our friendly smiles and laughter filled the distance between us. Unfortunately they did not have email. Only mobile phones and I wished there was some way to send their portraits to them. Anyone know if it is possible and cheap to send photographs by mobile?

Roman conquest in Gual. We were lucky enough to be staying the day of a local competition. This was for real. One of the guys was unfortunately seriously injured. Three punctures in the near groin! Thankfully he will be ok. Nimes, France was an amazing place to visit and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in Roman History. Photographically amazing opportunities! I felt really grumpy a couple nights ago. My new Gorilla Pod that I bought to go backpacking with turned out to need a lot more practice than I thought. I regular tripod would prove to cumbersome so I thought this Gorilla Pod would be perfect. Well...I think it would be more useful if I had a ball head to go with it. Every time I adjusted the frame the pod would loosen and slip. Not to mention I couldn't grip it to anything to get a portrait aspect instead of landscape format. I sat down on the curb in despair as I felt I was missing an image that I might never get another opportunity to shoot again. Then I remembered another time when I used the curb (for lack of anything else to stabilize with) and it worked out great. I was losing light fast and I wanted to use the polarizing filter and low ISO to punch out the sky so I was really grateful for anything that would help keep the camera still during a burst of 5 exposures set 1/3 apart. Used the 5 photographs to make this dynamic image. Thanks to Grant for being so patient with me! All worked out in the end.

HDR can vary quite a bit...from subtle to almost illustrative. I'm pushing it right now as it is still quite new to me. This HDR came from a combination of five exposures.

My friend Ed told me if you want good photographs you have to take chances. Use your two legs and move to make composition and fill the frame. Worry about what you didn't capture rather than how or where you got the shot. So I took his advice on this shoot and was lucky... I realized that most likely after 9/11 there were restrictions on photography around the Port of Vancouver but I managed to fit in an hour before security showed up and told me I wasn't allowed. Now I don't feel like anything I shot that day is top secret so I don't feel bad about being there. I do feel that showing the beauty of industry is a good idea as it is such a big part of our urban/Pacific environment. Thanks Port of Vancouver.

Coal Harbor is changing. Shaw Tower and the Vancouver Convention Center has brought a lot of activity to the area. Harbor Air float planes continue to come and go all day and the Olympic Swat teams periodically have drills on Deadman's Island across the way.

Rented a Nikon fisheye lens this weekend to play around with. Loving it!!! This images does not use HDR but rather a Nikon Speed Light and in camera Nikon D-lighting system. The statue you see on the left is about twenty feet high and topped with two bronze globes.
